Australian film organization creates Ledger scholarship

LOS ANGELES —

Heath Ledger was known for giving aspiring Australian actors a hand in Hollywood. Now, an Australian film organization has established a scholarship fund in the late actor's name to continue those efforts.

"There's an entire tribe of Australians who have all benefited from his generosity," said Susie Dobson, president of Australians in Film, or AiF. "This (scholarship) captures Heath's spirit and serves our mission to help and celebrate Australian filmmakers."

Ledger - who died at 28 of an accidental prescription drug overdose in January - had served as an ambassador for the film organization and its board wanted to honor him after his death, Dobson said.

Director Gregor Jordan announced the establishment of the Heath Ledger Scholarship Fund last week at AiF's annual Breakthrough Awards, where he read a statement from Ledger's father, Kim Ledger.

"Although reluctant to lend his name to anything commercial, we know Heath would be proud of his attachment to this scholarship," Kim Ledger's statement said. "This scholarship in part does what Heath has done personally during the last 10 years and supported financially or in kind many friends, Australian actors, singers, directors or writers seeking to ply their talents in the USA."

Jordan also said that Michelle Williams, mother of Ledger's daughter, "would be very proud and happy to be the first benefactor" of the scholarship fund.

The first recipient will be announced next year, Dobson said.

Aretha Franklin celebrates Black Music Month

'R&B is in good hands,' she writes in essay

NEW YORK -- An essay from Aretha Franklin, an Earth Wind & Fire tribute from Mint Condition and blog posts from rapper YoYo are among the featured elements of BlackVoices.com's Black Music Month celebration.
In her essay, which goes live June 15, Franklin expresses her enthusiasm with the state of modern R&B.
"At one point, I was very concerned when the hip-hoppers came in about the future of R&B," she wrote, "But now with artists like Usher, Anthony Hamilton, Fantasia, Chris Brown, Raheem DeVaughn, Erykah Badu and artists like that let me know that R&B is in good hands, absolutely alive and well and mega-watt."

BlackVoices.com is also hosting a "best album of all time" online vote, quizzes and interactive profiles of the biggest names in black music.
Said Franklin in conclusion, "Black Music Month really serves to remind us of what a really rich musical heritage and legacy we have that has been passed on -- in more than generous measure -- to our generation and the younger generation by yesteryear's artists such as Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke, Ruth Brown, the Clovers, Jackie Wilson, Johnny Taylor, Clyde McPhatter, the Moonglows, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters and the Drifters. So keep on doing it and keep on representing."

Jagger assassination plot revealed

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger survived an assassination attempt because a boat carrying his would-be killers was caught in a storm, according to a new documentary.
'The FBI at 100', a new BBC Radio 4 documentary, has revealed that members of the Hells Angels gang planned to assassinate Jagger nearly 40 years ago.
Tom Mangold, who presents the series, told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper that Jagger fell out with the Hells Angels after a member of the gang killed a fan during the band's infamous free concert at Altamont in 1969.
During the concert, for which the group had hired the local chapter to provide security, the gang terrorised the crowd and were reportedly offended by Jagger's effeminate dancing.
Later 18-year-old fan Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death in front of the stage. A Hells Angel was tried for Hunter's murder but claimed self-defence and was acquitted.
According to the documentary, the Hells Angels felt they had been duped by Jagger as fingers were pointed in the aftermath of the concert.
Former special agent Mark Young said in the documentary that a boatload of Hells Angels set out to take revenge on Jagger at his holiday home in the Hamptons, near New York City about 40 years ago.
Presenter Mangold told the Sunday Telegraph: "The Hells Angels were so angered by Jagger's treatment of them that they decided to kill him."
"They planned the attack from the sea so they could enter his property from the garden and avoid security at the front."
"The boat was hit by a storm and all of the men were thrown overboard. All survived and there was not said to have been any further attempt on Jagger's life."

"I was very realistic about the fact that there might not be any more room for me. I definitely knew I had lost my place when I left."

Jennifer Aniston's hair 'most envied' by women

Women envy Jennifer Aniston's hair more than any other celebrity, according to a recent survey.
In a poll of 1,600 people commissioned by Hair magazine, it was found that Aniston's hair is the most coveted followed by Catherine Zeta-Jones, Cat Deeley, Penelope Cruz, Angelina Jolie, Natalie Imbruglia, Victoria Beckham, Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone and Sienna Miller.
The survey also named 'the bob' - as popularised by Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes - as the "most iconic haircut" of all time.
The hairstyle, originally associated with Sixties stars such as Mary Quant and Twiggy, beat Aniston's sleek, long Friends cut in the survey.
Her hairdo sparked the biggest hair craze of the Nineties as women flocked to salons to ask for 'a Rachel'.
The Amy Winehouse-style Sixties beehive was third, followed by the 1970s Farrah Fawcett feathered number, as recently imitated by Madonna.
Mia Farrow's ultra-short 'Rosemary's Baby' crop was fifth in the online poll, commissioned by Hair magazine, followed by the heavy fringe worn to the side that Lady Diana Spencer sported when she announced her engagement to the Prince of Wales.
Joanna Lumley's 'Purdey bob' from her period in 'The New Avengers' was seventh.

The Dead Pool - 6/3/2008

The fifth and last of the Dirty Harry movies, The Dead Pool may not be the best in the series, but it's probably the funniest. Thanks to Evan Kim's reluctant "Chinese-American partner," Patricia Clarkson's tough reporter, and Liam Neeson's egomaniacal Brit movie director, The Dead Pool is at least populated with memorable supporting characters. The story -- involving a betting pool involving which San Francisco celebrities are going to die (who then start getting murdered) -- is a bit trite, but at 91 minutes, it doesn't get in the way of lots of old-fashioned shootin'.

Jay-Z And Beyonce Are Still Staying Quiet About Their Reported Wedding ... But Why?

Canceling the caterers, then hiring them back at the last minute. Confiscating guests' cell phones and cameras. Applying for a wedding license out in the 'burbs. Hell, not admitting that they've been dating for six years.
Plenty of celebrity couples try to keep their wedding days private by doing everything they can to throw the paparazzi and celebrity press off the scent in the hours and weeks leading up to their special day. Ever since paparazzi helicopters buzzed Madonna and Sean Penn's wedding in 1985, the cat-and-mouse game has become part of the story anytime a power couple make it official.
But Jay-Z and Beyoncé have taken the cone of silence to new heights by refusing to even confirm, even after the fact, that they're now man and wife — if they are.
"They are intensely private people," said Laura Schreffler, senior writer for OK! magazine. "It took them years to even admit they were a couple, and they say more about themselves as a couple in their music than they do out loud. I don't think they'll admit [to getting married] now, and I don't think they have to. They have no one to answer to." Schreffler said keeping their wedding a secret could be the couple's way of trying to have a semblance of normalcy in their otherwise closely watched lives.
So it's been left to fans and the paparazzi to gather the scraps of proof, though the newlyweds aren't making that easy either. Jay has yet to wear a wedding ring in public, either onstage the night after the intimate event at his posh New York apartment, or during a Houston Rockets game he attended on Friday with B, who covered up her hand so as not to give anyone a clear shot of her reportedly impressive wedding ring.
That was a sharp turnaround from the week before, when Beyoncé, 26, waved the rock around during Jay's April 8 show at Atlanta's Philips Arena during the line, "I got the hottest chick in the game wearing my chain," from Jigga's "PSA." Jay, 38, was not as forthcoming the night before that gig, reportedly saying, "I don't know what you're talking about," when patrons at his 40/40 club in Manhattan congratulated him on the blessed event.
This kind of secrecy is becoming more and more common among celebrity couples trying to hold on to their final bits of privacy in a 24/7 paparazzi world. From Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez pulling a bait-and-switch on their wedding guests by telling them they were attending a backyard awards ceremony to Ellen Pompeo keeping her secret wedding under wraps for weeks afterward, celebrities are getting better at throwing reporters off the scent — or at least keeping the photographers on the wrong side of the fence.
"Beyoncé and Jay-Z don't need any more press," Schreffler said, adding that it's also unlikely that the couple is holding out for a big magazine-cover payday for exclusive photos. "Jay-Z has more money than many people, so it's not about the money."
Jay may not be talking, but others certainly are. From tourmate Mary J. Blige offered congratulations the night after the wedding from the stage, to former Def Jam boss Russell Simmons telling reporter Chris Yandek last week that he was proud of his former protégé.
"I know Jay-Z. We signed him at Def Jam many years ago," Simmons said. "I watched him grow as an individual, and I watched him become a great giver. Beyoncé supported us at the Hip-Hop Summit. ... They are two people I have a great deal of admiration and respect for. I love them both, and seeing them get married is a perfect order. I am very happy for them."
But even Blige was a bit vague about the wedding when she offered some praise from the stage the night after the event, saying, "Congratulations to my man, Jay-Z, and my girl B."
So for now, until they release their next album and offer us a musical update on the state of their union, that's probably as close as we're going to come to an official confirmation.
